We operate like a community center. Each week, the14 members of our Advisory Board meet to discuss the day-to-day operations of the center. Part of the responsibility of being on the Board includes "working" to run the center in a "shift". Each week, our Board members work together to schedule two people for the morning and the afternoon shifts. One person is the Activity Coordinator and functions as the receptionist, activity leader, maintenance supervisor, and peer support leader. The other person works in the snack bar. Both of the positions can be stressful as they each require us to use effective communication skills, frustration tolerance, problem solving, and teamwork. Being on the Board is a big part of our recovery. We try to think of ourselves as providers of a service. We work on our "customer service" skills in both the snack bar and when working the front desk. Its more than just running the Center; we help out our community of peers as a group and as individuals. We make sure that we are available so we can offer a sympathetic ear, a voice of reason, or our own personal experience. Sometimes, we know that a person is needing the services of a professional and we are careful to refer to other community resources. Other times, we know that the best way we can help our community of peers is to make sure that we do our jobs well. We take pride in keeping our building safe, our activities fun, and our friendship unconditional. When someone is having a tough time, we try to be that extra layer of support to offer empathy, concern, and friendship.
